Clérigos Tower in Porto
A practical guide to one of Porto’s most famous landmarks: what it is, where it is, how to get there, ticket information and what to see nearby.
✨ What is Clérigos Tower?
Clérigos Tower is one of Porto’s most iconic landmarks and one of the best viewpoints in the city. It is right in the historic center, very close to Livraria Lello, so both visits fit perfectly into the same itinerary.
The tower is part of the Clérigos complex, together with the church and museum. It was designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni and completed in 1763.
It is 75 meters high, has 6 floors and 225 steps to the top. If you climb it, you get beautiful panoramic views over Porto’s rooftops, the Douro River and Vila Nova de Gaia.

📍 Practical information for your visit
Clérigos Tower is very central and works perfectly with Livraria Lello, Carmo Church, São Bento, the Cathedral and Ribeira.

🏙️ Is it worth climbing?
Yes, it is worth it if you want to see Porto from above. The climb has many steps and some narrow sections, but the views from the top make the effort worthwhile.
🧭 Suggested itinerary around the area
A very easy itinerary is to start at Livraria Lello, continue to Clérigos Tower, climb to the viewpoint if you feel like it and then walk towards São Bento Station.
From there, keep going to Porto Cathedral, walk down to Ribeira and finish by crossing Dom Luis I Bridge towards Vila Nova de Gaia.
