What is it?

The Don Luis I Bridge is a two-level metal bridge inaugurated in 1886. Its iron structure and huge arch make it one of Porto’s most recognizable images.

The upper level is used by the metro and pedestrians, while the lower level connects Ribeira directly with the lower area of Vila Nova de Gaia.

Where is it?

It is located in Porto’s historic center, over the Douro River.

It links the lower part of Porto, beside Ribeira, with Vila Nova de Gaia on the other side of the river.

How to get to Don Luis I Bridge

🚶

On foot

The best way if you are already in central Porto. From Ribeira, cross the lower level towards Gaia. From Porto Cathedral, access the upper level.

🚇

By metro

A very easy option is to get off at Jardim do Morro in Vila Nova de Gaia and cross the bridge on foot towards Porto.

🚡

Gaia cable car

If you are in Vila Nova de Gaia, you can take the Gaia Cable Car up to Jardim do Morro and then cross the bridge from the upper level.

Vuela With Me tip: cross it both from the lower and upper levels if you have time. The perspectives are completely different.

How to cross it

Upper level: the most famous for views over Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia and the Douro River. The metro also runs here, so stay in the pedestrian area.

Lower level: ideal if you want to go from Ribeira to the wineries, restaurants and terraces in Gaia.

Best time to visit

Sunset is one of the best times to visit Don Luis I Bridge, especially from the upper level or from Jardim do Morro.

It is also beautiful at night, when the bridge and the city are lit up.

What to see nearby

🌊

Ribeira

One of Porto’s prettiest and liveliest areas.

🍷

Vila Nova de Gaia

Perfect for walking by the river and visiting a port wine cellar.

🌅

Jardim do Morro

One of the best sunset viewpoints in Porto.

My Vuela With Me tip

Wear comfortable shoes, because the area has hills and cobbled streets, but it is absolutely worth it. This bridge sums up Porto beautifully: river, viewpoints, history and lots of charm.
