Porto Cathedral
Porto Cathedral, also known as Sé do Porto, is one of the city’s most important monuments: a fortress-like cathedral with a cloister, tower and a beautiful viewpoint over Porto, the Douro River and Vila Nova de Gaia.

What is Porto Cathedral?
Porto Cathedral, or Sé do Porto, is the city’s main cathedral and one of the most important religious buildings in Porto.
From the outside it feels almost like a fortress, with stone walls, towers and a powerful medieval presence. It is a very easy place to include in your route because it combines history, architecture and some of the best views in the historic center.
Where is it?
The Cathedral is located at Terreiro da Sé, 4050-573 Porto, in an elevated part of the historic center.
From here you can easily continue to São Bento Station, walk down towards Ribeira or cross the upper level of Don Luis I Bridge towards Vila Nova de Gaia.
How to get to Porto Cathedral
The easiest way to get there is on foot if you are already visiting central Porto. The area is hilly, but it connects perfectly with several of the city’s main sights.
From São Bento
From São Bento Station, it only takes a few minutes to walk up. It is a short climb, but you will feel the slope a little.
From Ribeira
You can also walk up from Ribeira. The route is pretty, but it is quite steep, so comfortable shoes help a lot.
From Gaia
If you are coming from Vila Nova de Gaia or Jardim do Morro, cross Don Luis I Bridge on the upper level and continue on foot to the Cathedral.
What to see at Porto Cathedral
The exterior
Before going inside, take a moment in the square to admire the stone facade, the towers and its strong medieval character.
The cloister
The cloister is one of the prettiest parts of the visit, with stone arches, an inner courtyard and areas decorated with Portuguese tiles.
Museum and tower
Depending on the ticket available, you can also visit the museum and climb the tower for beautiful views of the center, the Douro and Gaia.

Tickets and opening hours
The general ticket to visit Porto Cathedral, including the museum, cloisters and tower, costs around 4 euros. Prices can change, so it is best to check before you go or directly at the ticket office.
The usual opening hours are 09:00 to 17:30 from November to March and 09:00 to 18:30 from April to October. The tower usually closes a little earlier and there may be closures on special dates such as Christmas and Easter.
How long do you need?
If you only want to see it from the outside and take a few photos, 15 or 20 minutes can be enough.
If you want to go inside, visit the cloister and museum and climb the tower, allow around 45 minutes to 1 hour.
What to see near Porto Cathedral
São Bento Station
Famous for its entrance hall covered in Portuguese tiles.
Don Luis I Bridge
The upper level is very close and connects directly with Vila Nova de Gaia.
Ribeira and Gaia
You can walk down to the river or cross the bridge to continue the route on the other side of the Douro.
My Vuela With Me tip
Include Porto Cathedral in a route through the upper part of the historic center. I would not visit it on its own: combine it with São Bento, Don Luis I Bridge and Ribeira to make the most of this area.
Wear comfortable shoes, because there are several climbs and descents around here, but the views are worth it.
